Credit rebuilding is the first step you should take when your credit score is poor. Too many people have neglected to treat their credit score with the respect it deserves. Rebuilding your credit can be difficult, which is why we’re here to help. This three-digit number will affect your lifestyle and your financial status. If your credit is poor, you need to engage in credit rebuilding immediately.

After rebuilding your credit you will once again have access to the best loan and credit card deals available. You would be surprised, but your credit score can even affect your ability to obtain a good job. More and more employers are checking credit scores these days.

Now that you know how important a credit score is, you need to know what credit score is all about and how you can have a good credit score or at least improve your credit score. Essentially, your credit score tells creditors how credit worthy you are. After rebuilding your credit, you will look at credit worthy as anyone.

Chances are, your credit score may be poor because you forgot to pay your bills on time in the past or maybe you took out more credit than you could afford. A record number of Americans are being forced to rebuild their credit because of poor financial decisions made years ago.If you have a bad credit history, the chances of you getting that application approved will be slim. Or, you can get a loan or credit card application approved but it will usually contain a high interest rate because you are deemed too risky to lend money to. We don’t want this, of course, which is why you’re focusing on rebuilding credit score.

The first thing you have to do when you are credit rebuilding is to cut out the sources that are having a negative impact on your credit score. To do this, you need to pay your previous delinquencies or pay off your overdue loans. Trust us, it may seems tough, but credit rebuilding is worth it. This will not significantly improve your credit score but it is a good step in cutting off the negative reports that will make your credit score much worse than it already is.

Now that you eliminated the negative sources of the reports, the next step is to improve your credit score. There are several ways to do this. The first one is request for a copy of your credit report from the three major credit reporting agencies. By doing this, you will be able to know about your credit status and also know whether there are any errors in it. For example, if the credit report contains an unpaid debt that you have previously paid before, send a letter containing a request to fix it and also send a copy of the proof that you already paid the debt in full. Errors like this can and will significantly lower your credit rating or credit score.

The best thing you can do to begin rebuilding credit is to pay all of your bills on time in the future. This will build a strong relationship that will eventually bring back your credit score and credit reputation with lenders.

Always remember that it is you who will determine whether you get a good credit score or not. By paying your obligations on time your credit rebuilding will get off to a great start and success is just beyond the horizon.

There are few topics as polarizing as credit repair. Depending on who you talk to, credit repair is usually thought of as impossible, illegal, something you can only do yourself, or something you need professional help to perform. Rarely do you find someone with a perspective on credit repair that is not at the far end of one of these extremes.

The fascinating thing is that in most cases, whatever people believe to be true will be true for them.

The poster on the Yahoo! Answers forum who states that “there is NO SUCH thing as Credit Repair….it’s a scam….” will never realize any benefits from repairing their own credit. By believing that credit repair is impossible, they are fulfilling their own prophecy by ignoring their rights to dispute their own credit. By not believing it can be done, they are proving their own point. This person, and every other person who ignores the possibility of credit repair, will fall into the category of people whose credit scores will only improve through the passage of time.

The same is true of people who believe that credit repair companies do not work. Another poster on Yahoo! Answers stated that

“There is no such thing as repairing your credit through someone else. If they can, they are doing this via an illegal way and be extremely careful, as it can end YOU up in jail and fined.

The ONLY way to repair credit is to do it yourself.

Pay your bills on time ;o)”

Along with being misinformed about how the credit repair process works, this person is letting their flawed knowledge keep them from so much as investigating the possibility that a credit repair company may be able to help them out. Once again, in believing that it is impossible for a credit repair company to provide any value, this person has assured that they will never receive any value from a credit repair organization.

It is truly astounding how many people out there believe that credit repair cannot work and credit repair companies are nothing but scams. It is also unfortunate that it is these voices that seem to be the loudest because not only are they making credit repair an impossibility for themselves, but they are convincing so many other people to not even attempt to repair their own credit.

What is equally astounding is how these people can be so passionate about outing credit repair as a pipe dream and a scam when there are so many other people out there who are living proof that credit repair does in fact work. These are the people who have allowed for the possibility that their credit could be repaired and realized the truth about their credit reports.

It is hard to believe that anyone could completely dismiss the idea of credit repair when there are stories like this:

“I signed up for [credit repair firm] a couple of years ago. They basically write a couple of letters a month on your behalf to either businesses or credit reporting companies asking for verification of debt, that kind of thing, or if you instruct them, actually challenging the debt. After a few rounds of this, negative credit items start to fall off your report. You can totally do this yourself, but it’s been worth the cost to me (something like $40/month) since I am too lazy to regularly write this kind of letter. I also like how when the credit bureaus do bother to write back, they’re always pretty whiny and pissy about it.

Some people seem to think this is some kind of scam (like, paralegals write the letters on your behalf instead of attorneys, and some people don’t seem to understand that when you give an attorney “power of attorney,” they can write letters as you), but I think it’s a fair price for something I was too lazy to do myself. Ultimately, they pretty much got rid of all the negative items on my report except for the ones that were at least semi-legitimate. (I’m not going to pay a parking ticket I got five years ago in a state I’m not going back to.) The ones they did get rid of were things like AOL continuing to charge a credit card after a) I had cancelled the AOL account, and b) I had cancelled the credit card! It just wasn’t worth my time to chase this down with AOL or the credit card company.

It’s annoying that I’m responsible for fixing something that this bogus industry screws up in the first place, but other than that, I’m a happy “credit repair” customer.”

People who believe that credit repair is impossible will never see any benefit from it. People who believe that credit repair can only be done by themselves will only see the benefits of their personal efforts. People who believe that credit repair companies do not work will never invite the opportunity to have a credit repair company work for them.

Ultimately, when it comes to credit repair, we all create our own truths. All anybody can ask of you is to perform your own research instead of letting others choose your truths for you.

After twelve years of credit repair, credit score repair and writing credit repair letters to all sorts of creditors, collection agencies and credit bureaus, I realized that it was necessary to provide my services at a serious discount to consumers in need. I realized that not all consumers could afford my credit repair services. As a result, I created a hot line to answer credit repair and credit score questions. However, I noticed that it was becoming an overwhelming task for my staff and at much expense in order to provide the free credit repair services.

A little over two (2) years ago, a couple of my clients suggested I should write a booklet (20 pages) about credit score, how credit score is calculated, what to look for when calculating credit score, what is the best way to repair credit and some of the main topics of credit repair. They suggested I should provide this ebook for a price of $9.95. I thought about doing so for some time as I was thinking that 20 pages of credit repair ebook would not be enough to even touch the surface on so many subjects that needed to be covered. You see the entire idea of credit repair (credit score repair) or credit repair letter writing is not a simple task that even 50 pages would be enough. However, it was also bothering me to charge $9.95 for some limited number of pages.

Then I realized, I could sit and think and continue contemplating about writing a credit repair – fix credit summary pages until I turn blue, or if I truly want to help consumers with their credit repair and credit score issues, I must take a step and start now. That was two (2) years ago.

As I was writing, in August 2006, I realized, we’ll have a major problems with the mortgage loans being granted so easily due to the unethical practices of mortgage lenders, brokers and direct lenders. You must understand this point. For the past eleven (11) years, I was directly involved in assisting my clients get loans after their credit repair was reasonably completed and their credit score was around 740 or higher. Initially, I was just fixing credit and let them enjoy the luxury of such good credit score. However, after communicating with my clients a couple of months later, I noticed that they were getting rubbed by “mortgage brokers” and the so called “Direct Lenders” or even the loan servicing companies. It was unjust then and it continued to be unjust now. Since this is a separate issue of its own, that I must share it with you and teaches you what to watch-out for, I am going to create a separate article about Creditors, lenders, mortgage brokers and the “direct lenders.”

Let’s stick with issue regarding credit repair.

Most consumers fall in the trap of over extended credit when banks and credit cards companies offer one card or loan after another. The consumers think the best way to get-out-of debt is borrowing more. In other words, “steal from Pete to pay Paul.” This is one of the major misconception consumers have that puts them in a deeper debt and causes even more problems for them to the point that they have credit collapse (beyond credit crunch). They experience receiving a lot of called from collection agencies, having late payments, collections and charge off entries on their credit files (credit reports) and their credit score goes down to 400 or 500 level.

As I was typing my so-called ebook (according to push my clients given), I noticed that the summary book was expanding to over one hundred pages and I was not even touching half the issues. Then I decided to continue and make the book a “credit repair” book called “Your Credit = Your Life, Fix It Now!” Since August 2006 realization that we will have mortgage problems, my only option was to inform as many people as I could either by emailing or calling, I was not able to reach all consumers. However, “Your Credit = Your Life…” book addressed all issues.

Other misconceptions consumers have, is the fact that some of them think, a credit repair is a quick fix. They think, they can just wave a magic wand and their credit score will go up from 495 to 720 or more. That’s not how it works. A true credit repair or improvement in credit score takes time (several months to a couple of years). Don’t be fooled by what you hear as quick “credit repair fix.”

In order for you to do self credit repair which is the best method, your must follow several steps. Those steps are lengthy and require patience. It requires dedication, willpower and application of your own gradual experiences. For the past several years, I have a sign on my office door so that everyone can clearly see. I also have the quote on my business cards, letterhead, books I wrote and talk about it repeatedly. It says, “more is lost by indecision than by bad decision.”

Think about it for a couple of second and then relate these words to what has transpired in your life thus far. Just as I was contemplating to write 20 pages for an ebook and sell it for $9.95, I was thinking of two things:

a.	It is not possible to write just 20 pages,

b.	I wouldn’t have the heart to sell a summary book for $9.95.

I lost the track of my own quote. “More was being lost be my indecision…” I wanted to help teach others how to fix credit; I hired a staff teaching them the credit repair concepts, but wasn’t grabbing my keyboard to type what was in my heart and mind. As my clients were pushing me, I was lost in my indecision.

Most consumers do exactly the same as I did for a couple of months. Think with yourself. How many times were you planning to do something and you kept contemplating if you should do what was in your mind or suggested to you? I bet you did that a few times. I bet part of your problem was the same as mine. Where do I start? How do I approach it? What would be my next step? And, a long list of other questions. You know something. Unless you take the first step, you wouldn’t know what the next step is. Unless you set your goal, mind and heart to take an action, it will never happen. You will contemplate and continue in your indecision yet time passes you by and all you do get deeper and deeper in debt, pay more for simple loans, get drowned in debt to a point that you will take your credit or financial anger on your loved ones. This is all because you didn’t make your decision to do something to turn your life around.

My dear friend, stop feeling sorry. Here, I am pushing you to do something. Make a decision and do something about it NOW. It is never a bad idea to have a better credit so that you could have a better life and save more money. It took me several months to prepare the book that offers all you need to know about your credit. Believe me, I have seen so many credit reports that yours would not be half as bad as what I’ve seen. There is hope for everyone, especially you. You only become hopeless when you don’t get up, shack off feeling sorry and do something to turn your credit life around.

Please let it be now. Here are a few steps in what you can do.

1.	Get copies of your credit reports. You must obtain recent copies for all three (3) credit bureaus. One credit report won’t do. Why? Different creditors and collection agencies report to different credit bureaus. See the book.

2.	Compare each entry shown on your credit reports with the account statements you have. Whether it is an open account, closed account, a collection, a charge off or late payment account. You don’t know how many times, I seen credit reports where the consumer did not have any such account and it was creditor or credit bureaus mistakes. Read the book.

3.	When you notice inconsistencies (whether it is an account you don’t recognize or misinformation about an account), call creditors and credit bureaus. Discuss, dispute and be persistent.

4.	Ask for a conclusion, removal or correction letter.

5.	Do NOT settle with collection agencies. If you do or have no other choice, you must do two things, settle for less or don’t pay unless they agree to correct the entry by removing it.

6.	Do not trust a collection agent. They do NOT mean well.

There are so many things to talk about and so many techniques to offer. It is impossible to discuss all in this article. So, I ask you to do something useful and quick to improve your credit score, which is as a result of your steps in your credit repair. You don’t know how good it will do for you.

For a complete details of the list above and other topics use the knowledge base provided at link and pick up a copy of the book “Your Credit = Your Life, Fix It now!”

The Problem of Unrecognized Accounts

Discovering the presence of accounts on your credit report that clearly do not belong to you can be unnerving. If you are the target of identity theft you will need to employ a very specific credit repair solution. But you must explore the nature of the issue before utilizing this powerful credit repair tool. Literally millions of people discover accounts on their credit report each year that do not belong to them. Only a very small percentage of these incidents are the result of identity theft. The vast majority of these events are the result of what are called file merger errors.

File Merger Errors

File merger errors occur when the credit bureaus confuse your credit file with the file of another person and accidently merge their accounts with yours. This can prove to be inconvenient but it is not the result of illegal of malicious activity. Oddly enough, these file merger errors are an accepted side effect of a decision made by the credit bureaus in setting the accuracy requirements for sorting credit data. They have built in a certain margin of error to allow for mistakes in data entry by lenders. This allows lenders to access a consumer’s credit file in cases where some amount of identifying data is missing or in the case where there is a small typographical error.

File Merger Credit Repair Solution

Fortunately, it is easy to determine if you are a victim of a file merger error and almost as easy to resolve it with credit repair without invoking the identity theft laws. Just call the creditor and tell them that you see an account on your report and you need to know if they are really reporting it as yours. If they tell you that they have no record of an account belonging to you it is not the result of identity theft. If this is the case, you will need to submit a simple credit bureau dispute letter listing the erroneous accounts and informing them of a file merger error. On the other hand, if they tell you that it is yours and you know for a fact that you did not apply for the account it’s time for credit repair action.

Identity Theft Credit Repair Solution

The credit repair solution for identity theft is codified in the Fair Credit Reporting Act, Section 605B, and is very clear and simple; follow the instructions, and the identified information will be blocked from your credit report within four business days. All you need to do is circle the suspect item on your credit report, and bring it to your local police station. Tell the police that you are a victim of identity theft and you need an identity theft report to send to the credit bureaus. Theoretically you only need to send this report to one of the credit bureaus as, by law, upon receipt of an identity theft report each bureau is required to notify the other two, but I suggest sending to all three. You must also include identification. I suggest that you include clear copies of your driver’s license and your Social Security Card. You must also provide a written statement that the accounts in question are not yours and do not relate to any transaction entered into by you. I suggest that you have this statement notarized. Bundle all of this together and mail it to the three credit bureaus via certified mail, or if you wish, via FedEx or other overnight service. Once the credit bureaus receive your package they will block the suspect information within four business days.

A Cautionary Note

It is worth understanding what will happen after you initiate this credit repair process. Upon blocking the information from your credit report the credit bureaus will contact the creditors and an investigation will ensue. Identity theft is considered a serious crime and there is a strong possibility that when the culprit is caught they will be prosecuted. There are two major considerations; first, if you think that a family member might be involved, think carefully before using this Section 605B remedy, second don’t ever think of using this process as an expeditious means of credit repair. If you initiate this process and it is later discovered that you have committed fraud, you will face jail time.

You Are Not Alone

Credit repair assistance is available if you need it. Identity theft can be a very disturbing event and needs to be handled properly. If you do not feel up to the task you should contact a credit repair professional. A credit repair expert will help you through the process and insure that everything is done in an efficient and effective manner. Good luck!

Choosing a credit repair company is a big decision. Choosing the wrong company could cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars, and if they are not successful, you have delayed your goal of a good credit score by months or even years. And if that wasn’t enough, using a fraudulent credit repair service could even get you in legal trouble.

So to help you through this process and help keep you safe from getting taken advantage of, here is a guide to shopping for a credit repair service. Below are some tips you can use to make sure you end up choosing a legitimate credit repair company to help you work towards achieving your credit goals.

Know how the credit system and credit repair work

Before you even begin searching for a credit repair service, you should know the basics of how the credit reporting system works. After all, you wouldn’t go shopping for a new car if you didn’t know anything about how to drive or how cars operate. So make sure before you begin looking for a credit repair service you understand the basics of how the credit bureaus operate, how your credit reports are created, and how they are used, and why it is your responsibility to ensure their accuracy.

Know what a credit repair company can and cannot do

Despite what some credit repair providers would like you to believe, there are no secret tricks to repairing your credit. Credit repair companies use the same methods to clean up your credit reports that are available to you as a result of the numerous consumer protection statutes enacted to help protect you from being taken advantage of by creditors and the credit bureaus. The only difference is that an experienced credit repair company already has the knowledge and experience necessary to take advantage of these credit repair tools. In comparison, it may take you many hours of research and a few months of practice to figure out how to go about effectively restoring your credit.

Look at the services being provided

A credit repair company is legally able to provide all the same credit repair services you can perform for yourself, but this does not mean that all do. Many credit repair services only provide credit bureau disputes which can be effective for some people, but are typically less successful and take more time than pairing credit bureau disputes with other credit repair tactics.

Look for experience and results

While no credit repair company is perfect and ultimately the success of any credit repair effort is dependent on your creditors and the credit bureaus, an experienced company will likely produce faster and more meaningful results than a relatively new company that is still learning the nuances of the system.

Look at the price tag

The goal is then to get the best value for your dollar. To determine this, take into account what services you will be getting for your money and make a best estimate of the relative quality of these services. This should help you get a feel for how companies compare to each other. For example, if one service charges $49 per month for credit bureau disputes and has been operating for only 2 years, you are probably better off using a competing service for $20 more per month that also provides creditor interventions and has been in business for a decade.

Use your common sense

Just as you would at any other time when someone is asking you to part with your hard earned money, when you are looking at a credit repair service, trust your instincts and remember the old adage of anything that sounds too good to be true, probably is.

You should be completely confident that you are making the right decision. It is your credit that is on the line and your money that is being invested. Don’t let anyone pressure you into something that doesn’t feel right.

You Can Achieve Real Credit Repair Success

There are several important issues to consider before starting your credit repair effort. The time you invest in preparation will save you time and effort, and more importantly, insure that you get the results you deserve from your credit repair project. Take a moment, plan your approach, and proceed thoughtfully. You will succeed!

Make Your Payments on Time

If you are currently not able to keep up with your existing obligations, credit repair is not the right option for you. Before starting a credit repair effort your finances should be stabilized and you should be able to pay your bills on time. There is no point in cleaning up your credit report while derogatory events continue to occur. If you are having trouble paying your bills you should investigate other options, including consumer credit counseling and debt negotiation. You should also consider consulting a bankruptcy attorney.

Get Your Credit Reports

You will need all three reports from the major CRAs (credit reporting agencies) for your credit repair project; they are Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. You can get them for free at AnnualCreditReport.com, but I am sorry to say that I advise against this option, as it is difficult and frustrating. And in the end, should you succeed, you will have three credit reports in different formats, and all about as clear to the layman as reading Chinese. I suggest purchasing a nice tri-merged report. They are easily available on the Internet and should cost less than $20. A good investment in your credit repair success.

Get Your Credit Scores, Maybe

It seems like a nice idea to obtain your credit scores at the outset of your credit repair project so you can track the progress of this important number. Should you choose to do this, you need to be aware of a controversial battle between the credit bureaus and Fair Isaac Corp, the developer of the FICO scoring model. Lenders purchase FICO scores from the credit bureaus to make loan decisions. The credit bureaus, however, will not sell these genuine FICO scores to consumers. Instead they have created their own scores which are meant to mimic the behavior of FICO scores. Unfortunately, they often differ by as much as 100 points. At the moment consumers can purchase genuine FICO scores for their Equifax and TransUnion reports directly from Fair Isaac at MyFICO.com. A single Equifax FICO score is available at Equifax.com. Experian FICO scores are not available to the public.

Read the Fair Credit Reporting Act

You cannot hope to succeed at credit repair without knowing the compliance requirements imposed on the credit bureaus. These requirements are codified in the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Many people starting a credit repair program assume that it is only necessary to spot and dispute the obvious derogatory errors. If you make this mistake you are likely to leave half of your potential improvement untapped. If you take the time to grasp the essential reporting guidelines of the FCRA you will gain the legal leverage you need to get the credit repair results you deserve.

Read the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

If you have any collection issues at all you will need a working knowledge of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). This is not a difficult read and will give you a significant advantage in dealing with both active collections as well as dormant collection accounts on your credit report. Armed with your legal rights you will be able to stop collectors from bothering you, force them to validate their legitimacy, provide you with an accounting of the debt, and force them to remove erroneous and outdated entries from your credit report.

Learn Your Statutes of Limitation

Statutes of limitation define the time limit for collectors to enforce collection of a debt through the court system and are an essential tool in your credit repair arsenal. A statute of limitation (SOL) has no bearing on the reporting period limits that the CRAs are required to enforce. Reporting period limits are generally seven years for derogatory events, whereas SOLs are often as short as three years. When an SOL has expired, a collector has no way to enforce the collection of a debt. This gives you a powerful credit repair advantage; you may opt to ignore the debt with no fear of being sued, or you may choose to negotiate a very favorable payoff.

Consider Professional Help

If you are going to manage your own credit repair effort you must invest the time in understanding your rights and the compliance requirements of all parties involved in the reporting process. But if you decide that you cannot manage the effort it takes to manage the credit repair task properly you should hire a professional. Should you decide on this path I suggest that you write down a list of questions relevant to your case and call several reputable credit repair services and interview them. Choose the company that you are comfortable with and put them to work. Good luck!

Student loan consolidation is essentially considered as a tool to manage one or more debts. Such a loan also allows any student to combine his/her federal or private student loans into one single mortgage with extended loan terms, which subsequently minimize the monthly payment.

For US students, there are two types of student loan categories namely as mentioned below

1.	Federal student loans

2.	Private student loans.

Federal Student Loan Consolidation:

The Federal student loan consolidation allows a student to consolidate all his loans for one single loan at a lower interest rate. The student could also lengthen his term (tenor) of payment. Many financial institutions provide federal consolidation student loans. The students have a right to choose the most reasonable loan package that suits them.

But ultimately, like several other loan options, the federal student loan consolidation also has its disadvantages. Though the students are offered a consolidated loan for less monthly installment, it unanimously increases the full total amount that has to be repaid.

Nevertheless, some of the beneficial features of Federal consolidation student loans are as follows:

*	Interest Rate: Federal consolidation student loans have lower rate of interest than most of the private loan schemes.

*	Monthly Payments: There is subsequent reduction in your monthly payments. As a student, this can take the load off from your monthly budget and you can also pay the installments easily.

*	Single Loan: With loan consolidation, there is only one payment check to be paid each month. This is very convenient and uncomplicated form of payment scheme for any student.

Eligibility Factor for Consolidation Loans

A student is eligible for federal consolidation loans, when he/she is not enrolled in any school and has repaid the loans without any default. Even students who are in grace period after post graduation can apply for such loans. The minimum loan amount should be $10,000 or more.

Students having federal educational loans are also qualified to get a consolidation loan. Private education loans are not considered for student debt consolidation loans. Many institutions and companies provide federal student consolidation loans such as credit unions, banks and secondary markets.

Mixing up private loans and federal loans for student debt consolidation is not a good idea, as the federal loan interest amount is tax deductible. Some loan amounts are also forgiven depending on the nature of job or service. Private student loans are bereft of such benefits, as they are treated at par with normal loans. Combining private and federal loans for consolidation of debts makes you lose all the wonderful advantages of Federal consolidation loan student.

Student loan consolidation is specifically meant to minimize the monthly pay amount and for extending the repayable loan terms. It is very convenient for students struggling to pay their monthly installments scattered in several outstanding loan forms.

There are a number of different types of student loans. They are all created to help students and parents discover the right choice for their respective situation. The overall cost of both private and public colleges are steadily increasing and students need to find the means for funding their education.

Deciding which student loan, whether a private or federal student loan, is a very important decision. You will eventually be responsible for paying it back, so research all of your options.

What is a Student Loan?

Student loans are educational loans from a lender that are used to pay for tuition and other expenses needed for college. These loans can be for undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, and specialist programs, such as medical or law school.

The premise behind a student loan is the student loan repayment must start, with interest, to the lender within a certain time frame after graduation. A student loan is a means of helping to pay for the rising tuition fees, and can also be used to purchase computers, books and other educational materials needed by the student.

Types of Student Loans

There are three main types of student loans available, a federal student loan, a private student loan or a parent loan. Two of the most common federal loans used by students are Stafford loans and Perkins loans. What is beneficial behind a federal student loan is that federal laws regulate the interest rates charged for these programs.

A lender has to offer a federal loan at the specified interest rate, which is usually lower than the national interest rate. A federal student loan can also be consolidated after the student graduates, allowing the student loan repayment plan to fall under one large umbrella.

Private student loans are separate from federal loans, and students applying for these don’t have to fill out federal forms. Private lenders offer these loans, making them cost more because there is no legal requirement to stay within a certain interest rate.

Private loans also require a student to submit their credit history, and the interest and fees paid on the student loans are based upon the student’s credit score. Parents may be required to co-sign for a private student loan, making them responsible if the student has to defer payments at any time.

A parent loan, or the Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS), is a type of student loan parents apply for to encompass any additional cost their child’s financial aid or student loans won’t cover. PLUS loans, like other federal loans, come with a fixed interest rate.

These loans can also be consolidated, like the Stafford and Perkins loans, and parents are fully responsible for repaying PLUS loans to the lender after they are disbursed.

It is now easier than ever to find the right student loans as you begin to prepare for your collegiate education. You have a number of options, so taking the time to research all of them will benefit you.

Your collegiate financial advisor will provide you with a great deal of advice and direction. The good news is that a student loan will enable you to follow your dreams of pursuing a higher education.
